VINTAGE-STYLE HEART LOCKET PENDANT WITH DIAMONDS IN STERLING SILVER

A loving heart is the beginning of all knowledge. ~ Thomas Carlyle

One accounting of the origins of the heart symbol says that it comes from a species of giant fennel that used to grow near the Greek colony of Cyrene. Silphium, with seed pods that resemble the heart shape, was used by ancient Greeks and Romans as both a food flavoring and a medicine. It was used as an early form of birth control and became so sought after that is was cultivated right into extinction. The heart shape was used on the money of the ancient city of Cyrene which grew wealthy from the silphium trade.

This unique, vintage-style, sterling silver heart locket features round diamonds and is beaded with silver studs that are repeated in the uncommon bale that is also heart shaped, creating an unusual locket necklace that will be appreciated for its many distinctive traits. Two pictures fit into the blue-lined spaces in the heart to hold a memento that is precious to you. Traditionally, it contains portraits of lovers, but images of her children could also be held in the 1” square jewelry. We also have a wide variety of Silver Heart Necklaces for your consideration.

PAISLEY SCROLLWORK HEART LOCKET PENDANT NECKLACE

The human heart has hidden treasures, In secret kept, in silence sealed; The thoughts, the hopes, the dreams, the pleasures, Whose charms were broken if revealed. ~ Charlotte Bronte

Where the heart shape came from has another theory; one perhaps closer to the real truth. Certain scholars (Pierre Vinken and Martin Kemp for two) believe that the symbol came from the writings of Galen and Aristotle. Both of these philosophers described the human heart with 3 chambers and a small dent in the middle at the top. Perhaps artists and scientists in the Middle Ages attempted to depict anatomy by drawing diagrams based on these descriptions.

The design of this locket, however, hails from the Victorian era, when the paisley shapes etched on the heart were extremely popular. The crosshatch background makes the smooth swirls more prominent on the face of the locket. To keep the brilliant shine of the sterling silver, the piece has been rhodium plated to prevent tarnishing. At a generous size of 1.14” x ¾”, it will easily hold two pictures. Of course, a Sterling Silver Rope Chain (optional) would be an especially thoughtful addition to it as a gift. Be sure to see our lovely collection of Silver Heart Jewelry, too!

Grant thee according to thine own heart,  and fulfil all thy counsel. ~ Psalms 20:4

Long associated with emotion and pleasure, the human heart was eventually depicted as a symbol of romance and love in the current shape. It was especially popular when it was used in religious art during the Renaissance, illustrating the Sacred Heart of Christ. By the 18th and 18th centuries, the heart shape was used as a recurring motif whenever a display of love was used in Valentine’s Day cards and love notes.
