When the Pilgrims set sail for the New World in 1621, they were seeking a new home where they could worship God in freedom. For the sake of this freedom they endured a grueling voyage across the Atlantic and a devastating winter during which over half of them perished.

However, God had not forgotten them. By fall of 1621, He had blessed them with a bountiful harvest, which prompted the first Thanksgiving celebration. Edward Winslow, who served as governor of Plymouth Colony, wrote about this celebration: “our harvest being gotten in, our governor sent four men on fowling, that so we might after a special manner rejoice together … And although it be not always so plentiful, as it was at this time with us, yet by the goodness of God, we are so far from want.”

William Bradford, who served as governor of Plymouth Colony for over three decades, recorded the many ways that God provided for the colony in his diary, which was later published as “Of Plymouth Plantation.” In it, he wrote,

“What, then, could now sustain them but the spirit of God, and His grace? May not and ought not the children of these fathers rightly say: “Our fathers were Englishmen which came over this great ocean, and were ready to perish in this wilderness; but they cried unto the Lord, and he heard their voice, and looked on their adversity … Let them confess before the Lord his loving kindness, and his wonderful works before the sons of men.”
