What is the Difference Between Silver and White Gold?

Silver and white gold may look similar, but there are important differences that affect wear and value. Both are similarly colored, and both are popular for jewelry.

Silver jewelry is most often sterling silver, which means that it contains 92.5% silver and 7.5% other metals, such as nickel or copper. Sterling silver is a strong alloy that makes lasting and attractive jewelry.

Silver is hypoallergenic, relatively speaking. That is, it is safe for people with easily irritated skin or with metal allergies. But be careful of sterling silver that contains nickel, as some people react to nickel. Forms of silver that are less pure than sterling silver can cause mild irritation or leave greenish marks on your skin (they wash off easily). White gold, although containing gold, is an alloy that comprises gold and other metals that make the metal harder and stronger and white in color. At first glance, it might be mistaken for sterling silver, but under closer examination, the color is shown to be a softer white that can even range into a light, white-yellow tone. As an alloy, the color may vary depending upon what metal is added to the gold. This can cause white gold to be either cool or warm in tone. White gold does not have the grayish color evident in silver, and it will generally appear brighter than silver as well.

White gold made from different metals is used for different purposes. Nickel added to white gold produces a strong, hard alloy, perfect for making rings or pins. (However, about ⅛ of the population is allergic to nickel.) Alloys containing palladium are soft and pliable, making them good for white gold gemstone settings. A thin layer of rhodium is commonly applied to white gold, resulting in a dull luster that is similar to silver. The rhodium layer can wear off in time.

Silver is somewhat harder than gold, making it less susceptible to nicks and scratches. However, its hardness makes it more difficult to create intricate designs. While silver jewelry can still have detailed engravings, it does not lend itself to delicate forms. Silver also looks heavier than white gold.

In terms of value, gold is higher than silver. White gold, although an alloy, is still more valuable than silver, and the higher the percentage of gold in the alloy, the more valuable it is.
