She encouraged area churches to honor fathers in the month of June, the month of her own father’s birthday.
Over the next few years the idea of a day to celebrate fathers spread, and many Americans lobbied congress to make Father’s Day an official holiday. President Woodrow Wilson approved the idea, and even celebrated Father’s Day with his family in 1916, but never signed a proclamation to make it official as he did for Mother’s Day. Eight years later, President Calvin Coolidge declared Father’s Day to be a national event.
In 1966, Father’s Day became an official holiday through an executive order by President Lyndon Johnson. Six years later, an act of congress placed this holiday permanently on the third Sunday of every June—in other words, today! And, there’s no better day to honor dad with a classy ring.
