The Importance of Praying for our Children

The Importance of Praying for our Children

I am truly blessed to be able to stay at home with my daughter, Rebekah full-time to look after her and raise her. I am forever grateful to God for that. I believe it is so important for mothers to stay at home with their children, to look after them and raise them. However, I know that given the economy and all today that’s not always an option, at least not full-time. This is when we should be thinking about and praying about our children’s protection and guidance for their upbringing. We want our children to grow in the faith in Jesus and to obey Him, and do His Will in their life. It can start with us, as parents, by supporting them and praying for them.

The power of prayer is so great to us Christians, especially us parents who cannot always be there for our children to look after and support. This is when we put all of our trust and faith in God to look after them when we may not be physically present. “Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding” (Proverbs 3:5). We must acknowledge that God is our provider, our protector, our comforter, our Lord and savior, our heavenly father. He is always there for us, and will hear and answer our prayers in His perfect timing. “And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask any thing according to his will, he heareth us: And if we know that he hear us, whatsoever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we desired of him” (1 John 5:14-15).

There are many scriptures that we as parents need to focus on and pray about when we pray for our children. The first things we want to pray about for our children is for them to know that Jesus Christ is our Lord and Savior, and He came to this world to be the perfect sacrifice for all of mankind’s sins, and that whoever believes on Him, shall receive the free gift of salvation, eternal life with Him in Heaven. “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life” (John 3:16).  We want our children to come to Jesus and to know Him, to believe on Him and to follow Him in their lives. “But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name… Now the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that ye may abound in hope, through the power of the Holy Ghost”(John 20:31; Romans 15:13).

bible verse ring white goldWhen we have faith in God, we want to obey Him, and to do that which is righteous, which all pleases Him. “But without faith [it is] impossible to please [him]: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and [that] he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him” (Hebrews 11:6). We want the same for our children, to follow Him, and do His Will, to obey Him and please Him. “In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths” (Proverbs 3:6). As parents, we are role models to our children, so when it comes to our faith and our actions, it should reflect positively upon our children. Therefore, we want to pray to be good influences, to encourage our children to follow God and do His Will, similar to how we seek to as well. “Children, obey [your] parents in all things: for this is well pleasing unto the Lord… Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee (Colossians 3:20; Exodus 20:12).

In addition to this, we want to pray for guidance and direction as parents, to raise our children correctly, with the bible as the foundation. We want to ask for support in making sure our children grow up in a strong Christian home, with faith in Jesus, and obedience to God, in the strongest way possible so that they will not be led astray from their upbringings. “Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it” (Proverbs 22:6). When we completely trust God, and believe that He is our protector, and provider, then we find comfort and reassurance that He will always be there for us, especially our children, no matter what. For it is written, the saved will never be plucked out of God’s hand “And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand” (John 10:28). These scriptures give me hope and reassurance that even if I am struggling as a parent, or cannot always be there for my daughter, God will always protect her and provide for her. This is what I pray for consistently “What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us?” (Romans 8:31).

Lastly, the Bible says that God is love. We are His children, and He is our Heavenly Father; He cares for us. We must pray to God to let our children know this, to believe this, and find peace in this, knowing that God loves them too. Additionally, we want our children to be in a loving home, and to do everything with love, because without love we are nothing. Our children’s thoughts, and actions should be based upon love, God’s love “And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to [his] purpose” (Romans 8:28).

Overall, we want what is best for our children. We want them to be happy, healthy and safe. As Christians, we can stand firm in our faith with God knowing that His love, His grace, and His mercy will comfort us and reassure us and our children in our parenting and their upbringings.

Hope this encourages you.

God Bless.
