A Lesson in Patience: Wait on the LORD

We live in a world where everything is so fast-paced and instantaneous, we expect things to happen then and there, without even learning to take a step back and learn patience. Our trust can be in the present situation and our personal expectations, rather than giving it all to God, and leaning on Him for guidance and direction, being patient and content in all matters. The other day, I was driving with Rebekah to go to the shops when I noticed that the petrol light came on in the car. I was driving my mother’s car at the time, and I instantly panicked. I didn’t know how much longer I could drive for before the car would stop, and I was in a very hilly area and freaked out. I called my mum and got annoyed with her that she forgot to put petrol in the car, and wasn’t helpful with how far off I could be before needing to get to a petrol station. Shortly after the conversation I had with my mum though, I shook it all off and just prayed. I prayed to God to get us to the nearest petrol station and He answered my prayers. Everything worked out in the end.

This may be a silly example to bring up, but in the moment, I was so frustrated and concerned that I did not let my spirit be more patient and content with the situation, and allow God to do the rest. I should have just taken a deep breath, and instantly turn to God for help, rather than freaking out over what was really just nothing.

The Bible says in Psalms 27:14 to wait upon The Lord. We mustn’t allow ourselves to let the spirit of fear drive us in these kinds of panicked situations. We need to be patient, to have faith and call out to God for help, waiting upon Him to guide us accordingly. “Wait on the LORD: be of good courage, and he shall strengthen thine heart: wait, I say, on the LORD” (Psalms 27:14).

When we allow our faith to direct our actions and our words, then the situations that we face shall be dealt with in a much more confident and comforting manner, rather than letting the spirit of fear essentially get to us, as previously mentioned. We know that fear is not of God, it is of the devil. For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind (2 Timothy 1:7).

Having fear is simply an attack from the devil. So what do we do? We need to continue to pray to God, strengthening our trust and faith in Him, and to love Him, because He loves us and cares for us. When we pray to God, everything will happen in His perfect timing and according to His Will and not our own. Perfect love casts out all fear (1 John 4:18).

Yes, we may get so distracted or bothered by what is going on in the moment, but we need to correct ourselves, change our mindset in how we perceive and go out dealing with those kinds of situations, and let our faith in God dictate. God didn’t design us to be impatient, and bothered by all things. He designed us to be loving, and gentle and kind. When we read His Word, He tells us about the fruits of the spirit.  “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith,Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law” (Galatians 5:22-23). We don’t hear about anger, being impatient, or fearful in the fruits of the spirit. God is love (1 John 4:8). Love is not represented by these negative thoughts, emotions and behavior. Love is essentially caring for one another and completely admiring and glorifying God in all that He has done and continues to do for us.

Let’s continue to study and dwell on The Word of God, and pray that He changes us from the inside out. May His perfect love cast out all fear and anxiety from within us, and let Him guide us and strengthen us to be more patient, considerate, content and trusting. We must put God first in all things. When we turn to God first, ask for His help, and put our faith and trust in Him completely, then we can have confidence knowing that we will be okay. “Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you:” (Matthew 7:7). God will protect us and provide for us. After all, all things work together for the glory of God. “And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose” (Romans 8:28).
