Like it or not, the mores and morals
of western society have changed dramatically with scientific advances. Behavior
that was once not tolerated is now not only accepted, but also encouraged, with
little or no consideration of the possible consequences. The line between right
and wrong has been blurred – as has the line between safe and unsafe. This
cannot only be morally wrong and send contradictory messages to young people, it
can also be unhealthy or, at times, life threatening.
From a Christian point of view,
sexual intercourse is meant to take place within the confines of marriage. That
could not be any plainer.
From a medical point of view, a
study undertaken by the Center for Disease Control has pointed out that the
United States has the highest rate of sexually transmitted diseases of any of
the industrialized nations. There are 3,000,000 new cases of STD each year just
among teenagers.
Humans will be humans, and the young
will be, well, young. It is difficult not to succumb to peer pressure -
particularly "twixt 12 and 20" – as Pat Boone used to put it. A sound,
well-founded sense of what is right is necessary. An awareness of the dangers
that are out there is also necessary. Sometimes, these good intentions are just
not quite enough. Sometimes a physical reminder of intentions, of promises, can
be helpful or even necessary.
