Richard Joyce, an Irish fisherman, is traditionally the creator of the Claddagh cross. He designed it for his love when he escaped captivity by pirates and returned home to discover his intended had waited for him. The hands mean friendship, the heart love, and the crown loalty.

“The greatest gift of life is friendship, and I have received it.”—Hubert H. Humphrey

The two hands holding the heart represent friendship. When placed on a cross, they mean friendship with God.

“Henceforth I call you not servants; for the servant knoweth not what his lord doeth: but I have called you friends; for all things that I have heard of my Father I have made known unto you” (John 15:15).
