How to Repair a Gold Chain

Gold chains are monetarily valuable but also hold a significant sentimental value for the owner. So it is important that you, as the owner, learn how to repair a gold chain or make adjustments to the necklace you wear, including soldering, if required. It is a very useful skill to have even, if it’s someone else you are helping. In particular, soldering gold necessitates accuracy and the right tools in order to retain the integrity and appearance of the gold chain.

Tools and Materials Needed

Do not start the process of repair or soldering a gold chain until you have ensured you already have the necessary tools:

  • Gold solder: verify you have the correct solder alloy to replicate the gold chain (14, 18K etc.).
  • Flux: Flux is the compound needed to allow the solder to flow better as it stops it oxidizing.
  • Jeweler's torch: a torch specifically designed for detailed, intricate work that heats the gold without causing damage.
  • Soldering tweezers: these allow the repairer to very carefully hold the piece in place while working on it.
  • Soldering board: a board particularly designed for heat-resistant work.
  • Magnifying glasses or a loupe: to enable seeing the fine intricate details.
  • Cutting tools: to cut any damaged or superfluous links.
  • Pickle solution: To restore the sheen of the original piece.
  • Small brush: to apply the flux.

Step-by-Step Soldering Process

1. Prepare the Gold Chain

Look at the chain closely to see where the fix needs to happen or a change needs to be made, for example, lengthening or shortening the gold chain. If soldering is needed, cut away any damaged or twisted links. Using the soldering board and magnifying glass, examine carefully the area that needs repairing.

2. Apply Flux

With the small brush, apply the flux to the damaged link.

3. Prepare the Solder

Cut the small piece of gold solder. Position it over the damaged part of the link that needs soldering.

4. Heat the Chain

With the special torch, very cautiously heat the area where you put the solder piece. You want to make sure you heat it just enough to melt the solder but not enough to damage or bend the link itself. Ensure the flame stays small and targeted to only melt the solder and not affect the adjacent gold.

5. Allow the Solder to Flow

As the torch heats up the chain, it will melt the solder so it can carefully flow into the gap as needed. Once the gap has been filled with the melted solder and rejoined the 2 pieces together, carefully remove the heat and let the chain cool.

6. Pickling the Chain

Soldering usually causes a small amount of discoloration. To remedy this, open the pickle solution container and dunk the chain in it for a few minutes. This will restore the gold chain to its original polished version.

7. Polish the Chain

After you have let the gold chain cool off thoroughly, remove it from the solution and dry it off. Then restore the sheen with a polishing cloth or wheel if you have one. Make sure the soldered area is seamless.

Tips for Successful Soldering

  • Use the right solder: make sure you have the exact match of precious metal and karat in the solder as the chain for a seamless repair. 14K gold chains will differ from 18k gold chains.
  • Work carefully with heat: gold is sensitive to high heat so be sure not to hold the torch on the same spot for too long so it doesn’t melt more than it should.
  • Practice first: if you’re not sure if you can do this or it is your first time, practice on a piece of jewelry you don’t need in order to develop the skill to do the job properly.

Avoid these Common Mistakes:

  • Overheating the chain: err on the side of caution with the torch as too much heat will potentially change the color and slightly bend the metal.
  • Using too much solder: Use the smallest amount of solder necessary. Too much will draw attention to the joint. You want it to be seamless.
  • Skipping the cleaning process: don’t miss this important step as you want the piece to look brand new. This step is the final one to ensure it looks perfect.
