A Heart Like Gold

God is love. His love is unconditional and everlasting. We, as born-again Christians should embrace and mirror God’s love for us, as His children.

Love is the foundation for all things. When we have and show/express love for God and for one another, we become at peace within our own selves, and provide a positive and enlightening example of how others should be and should feel as well. After all, if we do not have love, then we are nothing (1 Corinthians 13:2).

The two greatest commandments that Jesus told us are to love The Lord thy God with all thy heart, all thy soul, all thy strength and all thy mind, and to love thy neighbor as thyself (Matthew 22:34-40). If we truly express our love for God and are loving towards one another with our words and our actions, then it allows us to become closer to God in the spirit, to deny ourselves further in the flesh, and feel comforted within our hearts. “Be perfect, be of good comfort, be of one mind, live in peace; and the God of love and peace shall be with you” (2 Corinthians 13:11 (b)).

When we put God first, then everything else will fall perfectly in to place in our own lives. When we truly believe in and feel within our soul and heart and mind the perfect, unconditional love of God, then that should be our drive to do all things in accordance to God’s Will. “And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose” (Romans 8:28).

It will also set such a powerful example for others to see because when we preach The Word to non-believers, we want them to not only believe in what we are preaching, but to feel it too. If we are not filled with the love of God when we share His Word with others, then how can we expect those sinners to come to sincere repentance and embrace what Jesus has done for them? The sacrifice that Jesus made on the cross for us all, for all of our sins, is the perfect, most selfless act that any man has ever done on the face of this earth, and it was all done with pure love.

Another reason why we need to be filled with the love of God, is because His perfect love casts out all fear. “There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love” (1 John 4:18). When we are afraid, we are filled with a spirit that is not from God. Fear causes us to sin, and to stray from the path upon whicn God has set for us. It clouds our judgment and keeps us from having a sound mind. “For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind” (2 Timothy 1:7).

So, with all of this said, what does it then mean to have a heart of gold? (A gold heart)? It simply means that someone has a very kind and good nature. Out of the goodness of their heart, the person does such selfless and generous things for others. As such, that person would be driven by love. If we are all driven by love, the perfect love of God, then we should see our actions change into kind, selfless and generous acts towards one another, rather than hateful, selfish acts driven by fear. After all, everything that Jesus did was in perfect love, and He is the one that we are all to follow. “Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God. Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God” (Matthew 5:8-9).

Love is patient, love is kind; it is not filled with pride, or is self-seeking. Love does not delight in evil, it only delights in the truth. Love is filled with trust and hope, and will always persevere. True love never fails (1 Corinthians 13). Let’s continue to be filled with the love of Christ, so that everything we do is with love. We need to set the example as believers towards those who do not have Jesus in their lives, to be the light shining in the darkness. Allow the perfect love of God to cast out all fear in your life, and allow Him to renew your mind and fill your heart with peace and joy so that you are moulded into the person that God wants you to be; with a mind like Christ, and a heart like gold. “A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh” (Ezekiel 36:26).
