Often fondly called “Old Glory,” the United States flag has undergone an evolution since it was first adopted on June 14, 1777, by the Second Continental Congress. The Flag Resolution reads: “Resolved, That the flag of the thirteen United States be thirteen stripes, alternate red and white; that the union be thirteen stars, white in a blue field, representing a new constellation.”

Log thought to be the first American flag design, the Betsy Ross flag was actually an alteration to an existing design made by multiple manufacturers in Philadelphia. Her alteration changed the six pointed star to a five pointed star, which was easier to cut. Since flags were handmade, this made sewing the flag much more efficient.

When Vermont and Kentucky entered the Union as new states in 1795, the flag was changed to reflect the new status. From 13 stars and stripes, it became 15 stars and stripes to represent the new states. It was this flag that inspired Francis Scott Key to write “Defense of Fort M’Henry,” later known as The Star Spangled Banner.

For awhile, the flag remained unchanged, even when new states were added. Then in April, 1818, Congress passed a plan to change the flag to have 20 stars, with a new star to be added each time a new state was added, but to reduced the stripes to 13 to honor the original 13 colonies. Each new flag would be adopted on the Independence Day following the admission of one or more new states.
