7 Ways to Strengthen your Marriage

7 Ways to Strengthen your Marriage

7 ways to strengthen your marriage

1. Loyalty (Faithfulness)

Hebrews 13:4 – “Marriage is honourable in all, and the bed undefiled: but whoremongers and adulterers God will judge”.

It may sound obvious to many, but it is quite common nowadays for people in relationships to be disloyal to their partners. Loyalty to your husband, to your wife, is absolutely essential in both strengthening and maintaining your marriage. If we cannot show our faithfulness to the one we love and promised to be committed to till death, then how on earth could you possibly be faithful unto God? Jesus said in Matthew 5:28 that if a man looks upon a woman with lust then he has already committed adultery in his heart. Stay loyal, stay true to your loved one, and stay faithful to God. This is an important foundation to your marriage.

2. Trust

1 John 4:18 – “There is no fear in love; but perfect love castesth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love”.

Trust is absolutely imperative when it comes to a marriage. If you cannot trust your partner, then the marriage will essentially crumble. Trust is another important foundation to have for your marriage because you have to be able to live in faith and not in fear. If you are guided by fear, then that spirit is not of God, and thus, you are essentially being led in opposition of God. “For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind” (2 Timothy 1:7). We are to be guided by the Holy Spirit, in truth and love; trust will follow. Any kind of distrust in a marriage is going to be very detrimental upon the relationship, whether in the short term or in the long term. You married your spouse for many different reasons, some of which would be that because you love them and trust them, no matter what, and are not controlled by the spirit of fear.

3. Unconditional Love

Colossians 3:14 – “And above all these things put on charity, which is the bond of perfectness”.

Charity (love) is the most important feeling to have and behavior to show towards your spouse in a marriage. Unconditional love, similar to the love that God shows for us, His children, is the most powerful thing to feel and show for your other half, because you care about them and you want to be with them forever. You cherish being with them, and enjoy their company. Like the Bible says, if you do not have love, then you are nothing (1 Corinthians 13:2). Love your husband, love your wife, unconditionally. Unconditional love simply means that you care about the happiness and wellbeing of your loved one, without even caring to think about what you might get from this yourself.

4. Submission

Ephesians 5:21 – “Submitting yourselves one to another in the fear of God”.

Submission is a huge component of our faith in God. We must completely submit to Him, obey Him, trust in Him and have faith in Him in all aspects of our lives. When we fully submit to God, He guides us to do everything in accordance to His Will and not our own. This pleases Him. Submission is also important in a marriage. Wives are to submit to their husbands, and husbands are to submit to God. This is God’s order in the household. When a wife does not submit to their husband, there can be chaos. In order to strengthen your marriage, you need to understand this overall structure in the household, and acknowledge that submission starts with our faith in God, and the rest will follow.

“Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the saviour of the body. Therefore as the church is subject unto Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in every thing”( Ephesians 5:22-24).

5. Forgiveness

Ephesians 4:32 – “And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ’s sake hath forgiven you”.

Forgiveness starts with God forgiving us of our sins. His grace and His mercy should be cherished in our lives as Christians, because God can forgive us, even when we have committed the worst of sins, or we fall back into old sins, or struggle to overcome other sins. If we cannot show forgiveness towards our brethren, let alone our spouses, then how can we think that God could forgive us? For it is written, “for if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you: But if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses” (Matthew 6:14-15). Change your mindset, and acknowledge that forgiveness can strengthen our relationships with one another, and most definitely is important in a marriage as well.

6. True Intimacy

Genesis 2:24 – “Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh”.

God’s design for us is for a man to find a woman to marry, to love, to cherish, and to look after, for the rest of his life. The man and woman are to become as one flesh, similar to that of Adam and Eve. This intimate bond that a man and woman have between one another is something that married couples need to remember, and bring about in their relationship with one another. True intimacy and connection with one another will strengthen your marriage.

7. Obey God

John 14:21 –  He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him.

Last, but not least, obedience to God. Similar to submitting to God, obedience to God is important as well in our personal walks with Christ, as well as in our marriages too. When we obey God, follow Him, be guided by Him, trust in Him and have complete faith in Him, then we will see a positive grow and protection of our marriages. When we obey God, we are putting Him first, above all else. As I said before with the order in the household, this creates a strong and positively influential flow in the relationship. Obedience to God is paramount to doing His Will and trusting that He will always be there for us, to answer our prayers, protect us and provide for us.
