It is no surprise that all symbols and signs hold specific meanings and symbolism. And the Caduceus symbol is no exception, such as you see in medical jewelry, like medical ID bracelets, pendants and necklaces.

Meaning of the Caduceus Symbol

Used even with alterations, most people associate it with the healthcare industry and medical professionals. It is also the official logo of firms like the United States Medical Corps and Navy Pharmacy Division. The caduceus symbol is also a popular emblem used in medical ID jewelry. However, not many people understand what makes the symbol so important to healthcare systems worldwide.

History of the Caduceus Symbol

Popularity for the Caduceus symbol began in 1400 BC and has since been relevant throughout the years, evolving.

The word Caduceus originated from Greece, coming from the name of a root that would come to represent the wand of Herald. Some also believe that it means ‘badge of office.’ Regardless, Caduceus was originally the name for an olive branch, and now it has evolved into the symbol of a staff entwined by snakes.

Different people associate the Caduceus with different beliefs. For instance, some believe that the symbol comes from an incident in Greek mythology. According to the belief, Apollo gave the staff to Hermes, the guardian of health, as a token of admiration. This was for him to carry the Caduceus staff as a symbol of his office of responsibility.

Symbolism of the Caduceus

You may know that the Caduceus symbol represents medicine today. But did you know about the different meanings associated with it? Let’s briefly see.

Caduceus in the Bible?

Many people also connect the symbol of the staff and snakes to a Biblical reference. In one Biblical account, Moses saved his people from the wrath of God, which came in the form of snakes. He did so with the help of a bronze serpent on his rod (Exodus 7:8-13).

In Numbers 21:8 also, we read, “And the LORD said unto Moses, Make thee a fiery serpent, and set it upon a pole: and it shall come to pass, that every one that is bitten, when he looketh upon it, shall live.”

Jesus also made reference to Himself and this historical episode with Moses in John 3:14-15: “And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up: That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life.” These are the passages, in fact, that lead up to the most famous Bible verse of all time, John 3:16: “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”

Greek Meanings

The Caduceus symbol symbolizes healing, immortality, and transformation. The Ancient Greeks viewed snakes as sacred beings and used them in various rituals for honoring Asclepius, the god of medicine.

On the other hand, the Greeks also saw the shedding of a snake’s skin as transformation, rebirth, and rejuvenation.

Roman Mythology Meaning

Mercury, the god of merchants and shopkeepers in Roman mythology, used his wand to stop a fight between two serpents. Therefore, some people believe Caduceus is also a symbol of peace and restoration. According to Romans, the rod symbolizes unity, whereas the wings represent divinity.
