Want to know more about the fleur-de-lis meaning? Keep reading for a brief overview of this unique symbol.

Fleur-de-Lis History

Historically, the fleur-de-lis has been associated with French monarchs because a baptismal lily was used in King Clovis I’s crowning.

As the legend goes, an angel or the Virgin Mary gave Clovis, King of the Franks (466–511), a golden lily flower at his baptism. Legend and mythology (not the Bible) states that the lily is said to have been borne of Eve’s tears when she left Eden. When King Clovis converted to Christianity from Paganism, this flower symbolized his purification. As such, you will see the legendary symbol depicted in fleur de lis crosses and jewelry frequently.

Apart from Christianity, however, the symbol also has been spotted in other cultures across the world, including in Rome, India, and Egypt.

Historically, perhaps the earliest surviving example of the fleur-de-lis design is a gold helmet from the Scythians, a European nomadic tribe from the 7th to 3rd centuries BC.

The first French monarch to use the symbol of the fleur-de-lis on his shield was either Louis VI or Louis VII, depending on which source you refer to. Later, the symbol was used by English kings to lay their claim to the French throne, including its use in fleur de lis rings such as you often see in signet jewelry.

Over the years, the significance of this symbol has shifted and evolved from religion, military, social hierarchy, jewelry, as well as architecture.
