How Much Does It Cost To Repair a Gold Chain?

How much does it cost to repair a gold chain necklace that has broken? And more importantly, is your chain repairable? If the links on your necklace have broken or the clasp isn’t working properly, the cost of repairs can vary depending on the specific issue. If it’s a simple fix, like replacing the clasp mechanism or mending a few links, the price could be substantially less than attempting to repair a more intricate chain design that has broken right in the middle.

Can Your Gold Chain Be Repaired?

Some gold chains can be repaired, depending on where they have broken.  Here are 3 things to consider in order to determine whether your gold chain can be repaired.

  • Is the clasp broken or detached?
  • Is the chain itself broken?
  • Is your gold chain solid or hollow?

Fixing a Broken Clasp

The simplest form of gold chain repair is if the damage is to the clasp alone. A simple clasp replacement will incur the cost of the gold clasp and can vary depending on size and weight. Usually, it is less expensive to simply replace a clasp rather than attempt to repair more complex mechanisms like the spring inside the clasp. But, by far, this is the easiest component of a gold necklace that can be fixed relatively easily.

Repairing a Broken Chain

The cost of repairing a broken gold chain necklace can vary and is subject to a few factors. For instance, is your gold chain solid or hollow? A hollow chain, such hollow rope chains, cannot be repaired if it breaks, whereas a solid gold rope chain can. With a solid necklace, it is simple to cleanly cut the ends of the broken piece to salvage as much of the length as possible and re-soldered the piece together in most cases. There may be some soldering marks unless the break is near the clasp, as we can use the endcap of the clasp to cover over any soldering marks. This method can be applied to some chain necklaces, but not others. For example, a gold box chain necklace is going to be harder to solder back due to its design vs. a gold link chain which can be easily linked back together and polished without even leaving any soldering marks in most cases.

What is the Cost of Repairing Your Gold Chain?

The cost of fixing a broken chain can vary based on the numerous above factors. It can also differ based on the type of chain as well as the weight and thickness of the chain, if we need to add additional links to repair it properly (when available). For an estimate, we recommend contacting a jewelry repair service. If your chain was purchased from Apples of Gold Jewelry, you can contact us to see what repair options we have available.

If your chain has broken beyond repair, another option is to send it to us for scrap gold and we will apply the gold credit towards the purchase of a new gold chain. While you will not get the same amount that you paid for your chain in most cases (since you lose the manufacturing labor and cost as well as the wholesale and retail mark up), it can be a viable option for chains that have broken beyond repair. Contact Apples of Gold Jewelry if you prefer this option and select from one of our many gold chain necklaces.

If we can help with any other questions about your gold necklace or jewelry repair, simply contact us!
