STERLING SILVER OVAL CROSS LOCKET

A beautiful woman delights the eye; a wise woman, the understanding; a pure one, the soul. ~  Minna Antrim

As the Middle Ages ended and the Renaissance began, people exchanged their amulets—worn as good luck charms—for lockets. These small pieces of jewelry were made to contain items considered good luck, tiny portraits, locks of hair, little bits of cloth soaked in perfume, or even on rare occasions, poison. They were worn by men or women, but in general being quite expensive, only by the wealthy.

Of course, today women wear these lovely pieces of jewelry, including this oval one emblazoned with a simple cross surrounded by curlicues on a stippled background. In shining sterling silver, it has room for two pictures that sit side-by-side in the locket’s compartment, keeping a memento of your loved one(s) close to your heart. At 1-⅛” long and 13/16” wide, it is generous and yet not ostentatious.

A wonderful gift for any lady in your life, she’ll be thrilled to receive it with one of our Sterling Silver Box Chains (optional). As always, it is sold with our 45-day, no-questions-asked, money-back guarantee! Part of our beautiful collection of Silver Lockets Necklaces and Pendants.

OVAL PAISLEY SCROLL WORK LOCKET PENDANT NECKLACE IN STERLING SILVER

O, thou art fairer than the evening air clad in the beauty of a thousand stars. ~ Christopher Marlowe

With the execution of Charles I in 1649, mourning jewelry—particularly lockets— became popular, concealing miniature portraits of the former King. In the 18th century, those who had lost loved ones wore intricately decorated lockets containing locks of their dearly departed family members.

Today’s lockets usually carry much happier mementos, although locks of hair are often sequestered there.

This oval shaped, sterling silver locket features an engaging paisley design engraved all over the locket’s surface and finished with a delicate etched border. At 1-¼” by ¾”, it is large enough to become a statement piece when worn on one of our beautiful Sterling Silver Rope Chains (not included).
