What is the Sword of the Spirit?

The apostle Paul admonishes the church in Ephesians 6:17, in the famous “Armor of God” passage from the Bible: “And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God:” What is the Sword of the Spirit?

The Sword of the Spirit is God’s Word

In Ephesians, Paul literally and plainly defines the meaning of the Sword of the Spirit. He says in no uncertain terms: “… take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God …”. The Sword of the Spirit is God’s Word!

Throughout the Bible, “the sword of the Spirit” represents God’s Word. By doing a simple scriptural Word study, it becomes quickly apparent that the sword is often a reference to God’s Word, most notably in passages like Ephesians 6:17 and also verses like Hebrews 4:12:

“For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.”

The Sword here is associated with the Word of God. What makes this even more interesting, of course, is that the sword is shaped much like a cross, adding even more significance and meaning to the concept of the sword representing God’s Word.

A Sword Out of the Mouth of Jesus

Again, we see an association with the Sword of the Spirit and the Word of God, particularly the word of Jesus.

Revelation 19:15 declares: “And out of his mouth goeth a sharp sword, that with it he should smite the nations: and he shall rule them with a rod of iron: and he treadeth the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God.”

It is the Word of God, represented by a Sword, that will judge the nations. There is also a reference to the Millennial Reign of Christ, in which the Lord Jesus will rule the nations with a rod of iron. It is by the power of His Word as represented by the Sword of the Spirit that will rule and judge the unbelieving nations.

Antichrist Destroyed by Spirit of His Mouth

The Bible also teaches that the Antichrist will be destroyed by the spirit of Jesus’ mouth. In other words, all it takes for God to prevail is to speak His Word and His enemies will be utterly vanquished.

“And then shall that Wicked be revealed, whom the Lord shall consume with the spirit of his mouth, and shall destroy with the brightness of his coming:” 2 Thessalonians 2:8.

Throughout the Bible, “The Sword of the Spirit” is associated with the Word of God in bringing about judgment on the unbelieving and the wicked. The Bible instructs us now, too, as Christian believers, to take “the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God” in our daily walk with Him and to be ready to spiritually combat the forces of evil in our midst.
