And They Will Become One Flesh

“Then the LORD God made a woman from the rib he had taken out of the man, and he brought her to the man.  The man said, “This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called ‘woman, ‘ for she was taken out of man.”  For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and they will become one flesh” – Genesis 2:22-24.

God made woman from the rib of the man which He had created. Woman was taken out of man and brought to him. Just preceding this very famous verse from the Bible is Genesis 2:18, which states: “And the LORD God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help meet for him”. So putting these two verses side by side, God created woman out of Adam himself as a “help meet” for him.

When a man and a woman get married and become husband and wife, the bond between them is all the more significant and meaningful when you understand the Biblical, spiritual union that occurs between them. They literally “become one flesh”, returning to the way that God had intended at the moment of Creation. They are no longer two, but one. They become a new creation unto themselves, a new family, under the blessings of the Almighty.

This is why it is written also: “for reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife”. Neither the husband or the wife are now any longer – in the autonomous sense – a part of their parent’s families exclusively, as they once were. As a new creation in marriage, they are now wedded to one another as one. A new family has sprung from such a union, and, while we honor our parents always, our priority becomes the new.
