Gemstone Rings and Earrings to Put Under the Christmas Tree
Gemstone rings and earrings are a welcome gift under any Christmas tree. But, do you know how the Christmas tree came to be?
While there are several legends about Martin Luther being the first to decorate an evergreen tree for Christmas, it’s more likely that that the Christmas tree originated as a prop in medieval plays. By the late Middle Ages, “paradise trees” were used in plays celebrating the nativity, which incorporated the story of creation. At the time, Christmas Eve was observed as the feast day of Adam and Eve, and these trees were hung with fruit to represent the Garden of Eden.
When these plays were banned in many locations in the 16th century, people began setting up trees in their homes. These early Christmas trees were known as “paradises” and were often hung with round pastry wafers symbolizing the Eucharist. In the two centuries to follow, this custom gained popularity, and was often accompanied by a shelf bearing candles, one for each family member. Eventually, these candles were placed on the tree, a tradition which foreshadowed the modern used of electric lights.
While some clergy complained that these trees took the focus off of Christ, the “true evergreen,” this practice endured. The Christmas tree came to America with German and Dutch immigrants, and the United States soon embraced the custom.
Today, the evergreen tree remains a meaningful choice to represent the life that Christ gives. Even in the darkest time of year, a green Christmas tree adorned with lights is a reminder that Jesus is the Light of the World.
