Rejoice with the Wife of Thy Youth: Advice from Proverbs

“Let thy fountain be blessed: and rejoice with the wife of thy youth. Let her be as the loving hind and pleasant roe; let her breasts satisfy thee at all times; and be thou ravished always with her love” – Proverbs 5:18-19.

i am my beloved's and my beloved is mine wedding bandWho says the Bible is boring? If you are not reading about the Creation of the Universe, witnessing scenes of envy and strife between family members, reading about scenes of battle, or trying to understand the things which will take place at the end of the world, there is always love and romance to peak your interest. God is a creative God, He is not boring in any way. Why would His Word be? He created all things.

The book of Proverbs is a book of wisdom, written as Godly advice from Solomon to his son. In the above passage, Solomon is instructing his son (and by extension, all young men) about fidelity to one’s own wife. The verses surrounding the above passage illustrate this. “Drink waters out of thine own cistern, and running waters out of thine own well” (5:15). Solomon continues: “Let thy fountains be dispersed abroad, and rivers of waters in the streets. Let them be only thine own, and not strangers’ with thee” (5:16-17). Then comes the famous verse about rejoicing with the wife of thy youth! Solomon is admonishing his son to learn fidelity, to be faithful, to be monogamous, and not to seek the “waters” of “strangers”. Good, Godly advice.

Marriage is to be between one man and one woman in a lifelong union, as Jesus Himself also affirmed: “… What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder” (Matthew 19:6).

Elsewhere, Solomon says: “I am my beloved’s, and my beloved is mine: he feedeth among the lilies” (Song of Solomon 6:3).
