Moissanite is a relatively recent discovery when compared to other gems, and its discovery is credited to Dr. Henri Moissan. While collecting samples in Canyon Diablo, Arizona, he happened upon some new crystals. He was exploring the Barringer Crater, a well preserved meteor impact crater of great geological importance. The natural form of moissanite is incredibly rare, as it really is a gem from out of this world.

Moissan at first thought that he had found diamonds of a dark greenish black color. Only after much analysis was conducted did he find he had discovered a completely new gem. In 1904, he called his discovery silicon carbide. He spent the rest of his life trying to recreate  the mineral. After he died, it was renamed moissanite in his honor.

While Dr. Moissan was discovering his rare find, another man—Edward G. Acheson—was trying to synthesize diamonds. In 1891, he produced his first synthetic sample of silicon carbide. A company called Cree, Inc, was working to synthesize pure crystals of this mineral, and they recognized the potential as a diamond simulant. Charles & Colvard emerged from Cree, and they were able to produce several varieties of moissanite, one comparable to the best colorless diamonds.
