5 Ways To Help Single Christian Moms Who Feel Overwhelmed

Today I want to talk about what to do when you’re feeling overwhelmed, anxious/depressed, and having to do it all alone. This is moreso specifically for single Christian moms, such as myself, but this can also help with other single Christians as well.

This is something that truly hits home for me because I have been feeling soooo anxious and overwhelmed since being pregnant with Rebekah! It is such a stressful transition in your life, falling pregnant and becoming a single mum. It is fantastic when you get support from friends and family, but overall, you are solely responsible for that child (or children) in regards to their health and well-being, and making important, life changing decisions about their future. The list goes on!

It isn’t just the emotional side of things, but also financial and such too! Many of us have to work in order to support our families, and it can be such a burden when we are so worn out from working all week, to dealing with a rollercoaster of different events and emotions with our children.

So what is it that I can say to you, to help you and encourage you to overcome these feelings of anxiety and depression, and the burden of doing it all alone? What will help you remove that dark cloud hovering over you, following you?

I honestly believe that all of the answers are in the Bible. I personally feel led to sharing various scriptures with you that I hope will encourage and inspire you to overcome these difficulties throughout your journey as a single mom (or single Christian)! We have to acknowledge the fact that not everything is going to go according to plan, nothing will ever be perfect, and we wil, have both good and bad days; we are only human after all!

Let’s take a look at what God tells us to do when we feel overwhelmed:

1. Cling Onto God

In Psalm 61:2-4, it says, “From the end of the earth will I cry unto thee, when my heart is overwhelmed: lead me to the rock that is higher than I. For thou hast been a shelter for me, and a strong tower from the enemy. I will abide in thy tabernacle for ever: I will trust in the covert of thy wings. Selah”.

What do you do when you are feeling overwhelmed? Do you struggle with it all, call it quits and accept defeat, or do you cling on The Word, call out to God and allow your faith in Him to help get you by? This is something we should all be doing as Christians, however I know how hard it can be, when we are struggling to overcome whatever it is that we are going through. When it all gets too much, (and it does, time and time again!), we honestly just want to throw in the towel, and call it a day. We also feel so defeated, and weak, and are yearning for someone to help us! That is why we need to cry out to The Lord, for He is our rock, our strong tower, and our refuge from the storms we have encountered.

You must remember God’s grace and mercy! You must remember and believe that we shouldn’t have to feel so overwhelmed, or defeated, with Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior. He overcame the world, and so can we!

1 John 4:4 – ” Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world”.

2. God Is Our Refuge – Trust In Him

Psalm 91:2 – “I will say of the Lord, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust”.

That’s why we need to completely surrender ourselves and put all of our trust in God alone. These storms will come and go, and as long as we remain faithful and trusting in God, and not allow our overwhelming emotions to control us or dictate our presence during these times, then we will be able to overcome it all, and grow stronger and more mature in the faith.

John 14:1 – “Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me”.

3. Learn to be at peace knowing that God is our comforter

2 Corinthians 1:3-4 – “Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort; Who comforteth us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God”.

I have struggled with anxiety and depression for as long as I can remember, and I still deal with it a lot. Just know that what comforts me is my faith in God. I know that some days you just want to curl up into a ball and cry, or pull your hair out from the stress, or shout from the rooftop to get all of your anger and frustrations out. Trust me, I know exactly how you feel!
This is why I am telling you what settles me and what comforts me, because I know it will help you too!

4. Give It All To God In Prayer

1 Peter 5:6-7 – “Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time: Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you”.

Whether you have anxiety, feel depressed, or just so drained and exhausted from a hard day’s work doing it all alone, give it to God in prayer. Let your thoughts and feelings be made known to God. He cares for you; He loves you, and will help you get through it all. Try to find some time in the day, even if it is only for 5-10 minutes, and use this time to find a quiet place in the house to stop what you’re doing and truly focus on God and His Word. A fantastic idea would be to create a war room, like from that movie! If you don’t know the movie, the war room, basically you just need to find a quiet place, a closet, an empty room, somewhere that you can use to set up as a prayer room, that is solely focused on you praying to God and reading/studying His Word.

We are at war, and it isn’t in the flesh, it is of the spirit (Ephesians 6). The devil wants to defeat us, to destroy us. He puts negative thoughts and emotions into our minds, and uses fear to get to us. We must not feel defeated or to let him win.

Prayer and The Bible are the most powerful tools you have that you can use in order to overcome all negative thoughts, feelings and emotions, and when you are going throug difficult times. Fear is not of God, it is of the devil. Feeling anxious or depressed can happen, but we must not allow it to dictate our lives. Remember in the previous topics I mentioned to you that in all things we should stay content? It is all part of our faith in God. Once we completely surrender to Him and not allow ourselves to be dragged down by anxious thoughts or depressing feelings over the battles we face in our lives, then we can truly see the wonderful, glorious and powerful God we serve, to do His work in us all!

5. Give Thanks And Praise

Psalm 28:7 – ” The Lord is my strength and my shield; my heart trusted in him, and I am helped: therefore my heart greatly rejoiceth; and with my song will I praise him”.

Praise God always, no matter what! We should always give Him thanks and praise for having another day on this beautiful earth He created, for the children He blessed us with, and for everything else that we have that He has provided us with and protected us against. Once you give thanks and praise, it is going to make you feel so much better! You will feel so uplifted by His spirit! Just remember to do this! You can pray to Him, read the bible, listen to worship music and dance! Do whatever you want! As long as we give God all of the glory! Praise be to God in the highest!

Mamas, I know what you are going through! I know it can be so very tough and overwhelming as a single mum! Even if you are a single Christian without a family. Just remember that God is always there for us. He is our rock, and our strong tower, who will protect us through the storms we encounter, and we will grow stronger in our faith in Him. Set up a war room, and put aside some time each day to pray and reflect upon every good thing that God provides for you in your life, and cast all of your anxieties upon Him so He can help you through it all. Rejoice, and be glad that we have the almighty father to look after us women!!!

Stay encouraged,

God Bless.
